The boteh has been curling its way across Kashmiri shawls since the Mughals. Weavers in Srinagar would spend years on a single kani shawl, and when the design finally reached Europe it caused such a frenzy that a mill town in Scotland started copying it wholesale. The town was called Paisley. The name stuck. The craft stayed in Kashmir.
